Stir Up (Part 5): The Lord Knows How

Episode Summary

False teachers are one of the most serious threats the church has ever faced, and 2 Peter 2 gives believers one of the clearest and most urgent warnings in all of Scripture. This passage is just as relevant today as it was when Peter first wrote it. Peter opens with a sobering reality: false prophets have always existed alongside true ones, and false teachers will always exist within the church. They do not announce themselves. They use familiar words like faith, family, grace, and even Jesus, but they redefine those words to mean something Scripture never intended. They minimize sin, deny the exclusivity of salvation through Christ, and make the path to God seem broader than Jesus described. How do you identify a false teacher? Peter gives three clear markers. First, they distort the truth by using biblical language with unbiblical meaning. Second, they are motivated by greed and self-interest, exploiting people with false words for personal gain. Third, their lives contradict their message. They call others to a standard they have no intention of keeping themselves. But here is where the passage becomes deeply encouraging. God is not unaware of what false teachers are doing. He keeps good records. Peter points to three historical examples to prove it: the angels who sinned and were cast into darkness, the world destroyed in Noah's flood, and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. In every case, God judged sin. And in every case, He rescued the righteous. Noah was preserved. Lot was rescued. The promise Peter builds from these examples is powerful: the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trial and keep the unrighteous for the day of judgment. This is not a promise that life will be easy or that justice will come quickly. It is a promise that God knows how. He sees. He acts. And His judgment is certain. The practical application is straightforward. Know the truth deeply. The more familiar you are with Scripture, the harder it becomes for a false teacher to deceive you. Measure every voice, every teacher, and every message against what God's Word actually says. Be intentional about what you allow to shape your thinking. Topics covered include: false teachers in the church, how to identify false prophets, 2 Peter 2 explained, biblical discernment, God's judgment and rescue, Noah and the flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, spiritual deception, Christian discernment, Bible study on false teaching, Peter's warning to the church, and trusting God's justice.
